The American Kennel Club has a new list of top dogs.

According to AKC dog registration statistics, across the country the top 10 breeds are (in order of ranking): Retriever (Labrador), Yorkshire Terrier, German Shepherd Dog, Retriever (Golden), Beagle (go Uno, go!), Boxer, Dachshund, Poodle, Shih Tzu, and Bulldog.

The AKC even has rankings broken down by major city, and where I live (Sacramento, Calif.), the top dogs are: Labrador Retriever, Yorkshire Terrier, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Dachshund, Poodle, Boxer, Shih Tzu, Bulldog, and Pomeranian (tied with Bulldog).

Reflecting the current popularity of the Lab, Yorkie, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever, the first four breeds in Sacramento’s Top 10 are identical to the nation’s favorites.

Last year, Sacramento residents included the Chihuahua and Pug in the Top 10 list; this year, both breeds fell off in rankings to 12th and 13th place.

Not that it matters, because to me it certainly does not, but Greyhounds are ranked 133rd nationally (and they ranked 136th last year).

So I have to ask…what’s your dog’s rank?
