I have the most amazing Shih Tzu in the world. Her name is Bella and we adopted her from The Animal Rescue Foundation. She was rescued from a horrible puppy mill that was closed due to inhumane conditions. After many months of being patient and giving her time to adjust, she has turned into the most wonderful companion. She has the sweetest personality and is a total cuddle-bug!

One thing I have to say about Bella, is she kind of marches to the beat of her own drum. There is no forcing Bella to do anything, and I wouldn’t want to! All I want her to do is enjoy life and forget the life she once had to live. Also, as we adopted Bella when she was almost a year old, it is harder to train after that time.

However, I found this video on youtube today of Sadie, a three year old Shih Tzu, who obeys very well! She even knows how to do the bang and roll over.

When people say fashion has gone to the dogs, they are right on the money, as August 23 and 24 is New York Pet Fashion Week at the Metropolitan Pavilion and Altman Building, 125-135 West 18th Steet in New York City.

The show’s mission is to create an inspiring and unique tradeshow venue for national and international pet lifestyle exhibitors and buyers.

The following product categories are represented:

• Fashion, Jewelry and Accessories
• Collars and Leashes
• Toys
• Foods and Treats
• Bedding
• Fragrances
• Grooming Products
• Health Products
• Specialty Items

Pet Fashion Week is not only a trade show but also a designer platform. The designer platform objective is to nurture the development of new ideas and innovation in the pet industry and features multiple design awards, special events and runway shows. The show provides a high-profile environment in which upcoming designers are being presented alongside established ones in front of a high concentration of international media and buyers.

While my friend’s handsome greyhound who, by the way, is also a pal of my own girl, Greta, recuperates from his recent surgery, I am already looking forward to cooler weather so we can all get together for a romp.

Until then, this video I found on YouTube featuring a tripod greyhound who was rehabilitated at a Spanish animal shelter will have to suffice.

Although I could never get my greyhound, Greta, to do this, because she hates water, I love to see the dock dogs doing their thing.

For those (like me) who enjoy seeing dogs have some fun, July 12 and 13, the Meet Me at Mill Creek Festival in Mill Creek, Wash., is having their annual Puget Sound Dock Dogs competition. The event helps raise awareness for the American College of Internal Veterinary Medicine’s Chase Away K9 Cancer organization.

Events details can be found here, and all levels of jumping ability are encouraged to participate–the only prerequisite is that your dog likes to get wet.

If you can’t make it up there to see the action live, check out the video above from last year’s event and enjoy the dock dogs vicariously.

On a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than dipping your paws in a cool pool. And if that pool is in your back yard, all the better!

If you want to be the cool “dog” on the block, get a plastic kiddie pool for your dog. (In this case, inflatable won’t due, because your dog’s nails will most likely pop the pool immediately.)

With close supervision, a kiddie pool can last for years (or it can become a very large chew toy, if your pooch is left unsupervised with it).

Plastic kiddie pools can be found at most grocery stores, as well as larger retailers and some toy stores.

A kiddie pool might be just the thing to keep you and your hot dog cool through the summer months.

You want this…

There are some great, educational videos out there in cyberspace, such as this one on DogChannel.com, which features author Ken Foster, who penned Dogs I Have Met and the People They Found. Here, Foster shares his views on pit bulls, among other things. (I have worked in the past with BadRap, Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pitbulls, and I firmly believe that the breed is not the probelm, it’s often the owners.)

Bill Cosby and his terrier, Harry, sit down for a quick interview, and when Cosby’s in the house, you can bet you’ll be laughing in no time.

Lastly, you can now determine the exact breed of your dog, via this new product. So if you don’t mind spending some bucks so you can say with definity just what your dog is, you may want to check it out.

Happy viewing!
