How to Help Fight Canine Dental Disease

A new dental vaccine is now available to help you keep Fido’s teeth pearly white and free of disease. The Porphyromonas Vaccine is available through licensed veterinarians as another tool to ward off canine periodontal disease and promote good oral health.
According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 80 percent of dogs show signs of oral disease by age three. Although the vaccine can help ward off serious disease, you still need to get your pooch’s teeth cleaned periodically, and maintain a regular brushing regimen.
The vaccine is meant to be used as part of a total oral health care regimen to prevent not only bad breath, but numerous other problems associated with an unhealthy mouth, like liver and heart disease. Your veterinarian will know if the vaccine is right for your dog, so discuss this and all other vaccines with your vet to find out what you need and what you can safely skip.
