How to Avoid Dognapping
![]()
Yesterday on the Today show, there was a segment about the recent rise in dognapping, particularly of purebred and crossbred dogs, especially toy breeds such as Chihuahuas, Yorkshire terriers and Maltese.
According to American Kennel Club’s 21st Century Dog Owners Study, 88 percent of people think dogs are a member of the family–thus more people would be willing to pay a ransom to get their beloved dog back.
The Today show recommends these tips to avoid a dognapping:
- Never leave your dog unattended in a yard
- Keep the gates and doors to your home locked
- Never leave your dog unattended in the car (even a locked car)–which you should not be doing anyway!
- Never leave your dog tied up outside a store or restaurant
- Make sure your dog has a collar, current ID tags and is microchiped
- Keep your dog on a leash
Common sense also plays a role in dognapping avoidance.
Stay aware of your surroundings and pay attention to people watching you or your dog; walk in well-lit areas and have a cell phone handy; and don’t tell strangers details about your dog, such as the purchase price or where you live.
The world will always have criminals in it, but these tips might just help you avoid becoming a dognapping victim.
